Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the upcoming national dietary guidelines are being built on a straightforward approach that emphasizes sound, simple and clear recommendations.

“These guidelines will prioritize whole, healthy and nutritious foods, such as whole fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and meats, and suggest limiting highly processed foods and those high in sugar,” Rollins said.

The guidelines will reflect recommendations from the MAHA Commission, on which Rollins serves. “I am encouraged by the roadmap that this report presents. It shows where opportunities exist to improve technology, research and outcomes,” she added.

Commodity groups, which had criticized an earlier MAHA report, welcomed the revised version for recognizing EPA’s science-based pesticide approvals as well as the benefits of beef and whole milk. Another outcome of the MAHA process is the launch of a pilot program on regenerative farming practices. “To address on-farm resource concerns, while also providing farmers with usable, outcomes-based conservation plans,” Rollins explained.

The effort is expected to use existing research funds to deliver applied science that helps farmers regenerate soil while reducing input costs.
